Where Did Men’s T-Shirts Come From?

By far the most popular garment for the male sex is the classic men’s t-shirt. Everyone owns them and it’s hard to think of a time when they weren’t in production. Surprisingly, it wasn’t that long ago.

The first t-shirts that we know today started to appear in early 1913 in the United States. The US Navy was issuing them to all new recruits to be warn as undergarments. They served their purpose as protection from the bitter cold and as a step further from pneumonia if a sailor was to be caught in the icy sea. They were produced incredibly cheaply and easily and it wasn’t long before all of the forces were giving them out to new recruits as part of the standard uniform.

The Great Depression was a tough time for all American families and ways of dressing comfortably and cheaply were essential. It was not uncommon for men to wear t-shirts underneath their uniforms when working in factories and out on fields.

During the 1920s, US dictionaries had started printing the word ‘t-shirt’ and it became common in everyday language, even if everyone didn’t own one. It was no surprise that as the Second World War got closer, soldiers were once again issues with them as part of their uniform packs.

They became the cool, stylish item to have in the 1950's when Marlon Brando wore nothing but men’s t-shirts during the hit film ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Everyone wanted one and this is when business minds realised that there was a market for them.

As the 60’s and 70s drew to a close, everyone wore t-shirts whether it was promotion of some kind, a slogan from a movie or a protest aid. Since then, men’s t-shirts have been common every day wear for men all around the world and the garment doesn't seem to be going anywhere soon.

Character Clothing

There seems to be a big craze in American TV shows at the moment. Sure, TV from the States has always been popular, but shows such as Breaking Bad, Prison Break and The Walking Dead are all the rage at the moment. I've started to notice that a lot more people are wearing character T-Shirts. Just yesterday I was walking through my local supermarket and I saw somebody wearing a Game of Thrones tee (which looked awesome I might add).

I started looking around for men’s tops with characters on as I don’t actually have any. I'm quite into superheroes and old TV shows so I was quite open minded as to what I would find.

I stumbled across Everything5Pounds.com, a site which I know my girlfriend and sister use. I didn't realise that they did men’s clothing so it was a nice way to pass some time, scrolling through to see what they had on offer.

That’s when I found them, just what I was looking for! Men’s tops containing characters from old TV shows. I purchased a couple immediately, my favourite being the cartoon Mr T from the A Team’s animated face and a quote. I added the items to my basket and that’s when I realised how good value for money the website is.

I had bought 6 new men’s tops for just £30! Sure, I shop in places like Primark and Asda but I didn't even have to move to find these bad boys.

I'm just waiting for my parcel to arrive now! My girlfriend is so pleased that I bought something from Everything5Pounds as she is always raging on about how good value for money everything is. I always used to nod along to what she was saying but I really get it now!

She found the website by entering a give-away that her friend had shared on Facebook. She didn't win but that’s when she got hooked. I think it’s safe to say that there’s going to be a lot of parcels on our doorstep over the next few weeks and they’re not going to be just hers!
